Course Description
This course will begin with a look at the Bill of Rights, and the Principles of the Constitution. Students will examine how the Bill of Rights protects individual liberties from abuse, and how power is spread between the three branches of government. Then students will explore the motives for European exploration of the Americas, and the consequences that followed. We will begin the second nine weeks with a look Road to the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, War for Independence, and the challenges the country faced after independence was gained. The third nine weeks will look at the early American presidents, and how federal power was expanded. It will end with an examination of how America grew from 13 states to spanning a continent. We will finish the year with a study of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Course Requirements
1. Students are expected to bring any materials handed out previously, blank paper and a writing instrument to class everyday. Students will need to carry a binder to keep materials.
2. A final will be given at the end of each nine weeks to check for understanding and student progress.
3. We will also be having weekly content tests on key terms, with a new list every nine weeks. Check quizlet.com and type mrpompey into the search engine to find these index cards.
4. Students will be expected to complete ALL assignments, quizzes, and tests.
Evaluation tools
Students will receive a letter grade for each of the nine (4) week grading periods, a letter grade for the first semester, a letter grade for the second semester, and a final grade. The final grade will consist of the average of the first and second semester. The letter grade for each grading period will come from the following categories:
1) Participation in Online Discussion
Students will answer one online discussion per unit, and respond to the answer of two other students.
2) Homework Assignments
Ex. Written Assignments, Guided Reading Activities, Classroom Activities, Maps, Biographies
3) Quizzes and Projects
A mixture of scheduled and pop quizzes will be given.
4) Tests
Online Discussion Questions
This class will be using the online site SCHOOLOGY for its unit discussions. I will post one question per unit, and the students will have several days to respond to the question. Each post will need to be 150 words. After that, the students will have several days to post two responses to the posts of another student. These responses will need to be 75 words each. Please refer to the rubric for how grades will be determined.

Classroom Environment
1) Positive Work Environment
a. Two simple rules
i. Avoid Insubordination
ii. If you are not sure your action is appropriate or if you have to even consider if it is inappropriate DONT DO IT!!
2) Tardiness - (Office Referral)
a. Students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the bell rings at the beginning and the end of the period. Students are allowed five unexcused tardies for the year, after that the student will receive an office referral.
Academic Information
1. Make-up Work
a. Students will receive, at minimum, the number of excused days out to complete their work for full credit
b. Some assignments are subject to change for make-up purposes.
c. Unexcused absences will result in a zero.
d. You are expected to make up assignments if you are out of class due to an out of school suspension. You are still responsible for that information on a test.
2. Late Work
a. All work is due at the beginning of class.
1. One School Day Late: 90% of full credit
2. Two School Days Late: 80% of full credit
3. Three School Days Late: 70% of full credit
4. Four School Days Late: 60% of full credit
5. Five School Days or more: 50% of full credit

1. Academic Honesty
a. Plagarism on any assignment will result in a score of zero for the assignment
b. Talking during or after a quiz or test will result in lost points for that quiz or test
c. In absence of a formal code, instructor will evaluate each instance on an individual basis.
2. Enforcement of class policies
a. Failure to comply with class policies may result in any or all of the following: verbal warning, removal from class, phone call home, lunch detention with Mr. Pompey, or sent to the office for administration handling.
